US lawmakers challenge ambiguity over Israel's nuclear capabilities Thirty Democrats in the US House of Representatives have called for greater transparency regarding Israel’s nuclear capabilities, urging the administration of Secretary of State Marco Rubio to clarify longstanding ambiguity. In a joint statement, the lawmakers said the United States is “fighting this war side by side with a country whose potential nuclear weapons program the United States government officially refuses to acknowledge”. The Democrats said Congress has a “constitutional responsibility to be fully informed about the nuclear balance in the Middle East, the risk of escalation by any party to this conflict, and the administration’s planning and contingencies for such scenarios”. They added that a policy of “official ambiguity” makes regional non-proliferation “impossible”, noting Iran’s nuclear decisions are not made in a “vacuum” but shaped by “the perceived capabilities of each country”.
